Watercolor Paper Guide: Weight, Texture and Cotton Content

How to choose watercolor paper: what 140 lb and 300 gsm mean, cold press vs hot press vs rough, cotton vs cellulose, blocks vs pads, and stretching.

Quick answer

For most watercolor painting, choose 140 lb (300 gsm) paper: heavy enough to take washes without much buckling. Cold press has a medium texture and suits most styles; hot press is smooth for fine detail and illustration; rough has the most texture for expressive washes. 100% cotton paper handles water, lifting and layering best; cellulose paper is cheaper and good for practice.

Paper makes as much difference to watercolor as paint. Here is what the labels mean.

Weight

Weight Behavior
90 lb (190 gsm) Light; buckles with washes. Sketching and practice
140 lb (300 gsm) The standard; mild buckling
300 lb (640 gsm) Heavy; stays flat, no stretching needed

Surface texture

  • Cold press (NOT): medium texture. The most versatile choice.
  • Hot press: smooth. Great for fine detail, botanical work and scanning.
  • Rough: heavy texture for loose, expressive painting and granulation.

Cotton vs cellulose

100% cotton Cellulose (wood pulp)
Absorbency Even, slower drying Faster, can be patchy
Lifting and layering Excellent Limited
Durability Survives scrubbing Surface can pill
Price Higher Lower

A good approach: practice on cellulose, paint finished pieces on cotton.

Formats

  • Pads: glued on one edge; sheets may buckle.
  • Blocks: glued on all sides; stay flat.
  • Sheets: full-size, cut to any size.
  • Sketchbooks: convenient for studies and travel.

Preventing buckling

Use heavier paper, a block, or stretch lighter paper: wet it, tape it to a board with gummed tape, and let it dry flat before painting.

Archival quality

Look for acid-free paper, so work doesn’t yellow over time.

Common questions

What weight watercolor paper should I use?

140 lb (300 gsm) is the standard for most painting. Lighter paper buckles more. 300 lb (640 gsm) paper barely buckles at all, even with heavy washes.

Is cotton watercolor paper worth it?

For finished work, yes. 100% cotton paper absorbs evenly, allows lifting and layering, and resists damage from scrubbing. Cellulose paper is fine for practice and sketching.

What is a watercolor block?

A stack of sheets glued on all four sides, so each sheet stays flat while you paint. Slide a knife into the gap to remove the finished sheet.
